It's Easy to Write A Poem

I wrote this yesterday evening at a coffee shop. I'm sure I'll do some (more) editing at some point, but I thought I'd share it - just a bit of fun. :)

It's Easy to Write a Poem

It's easy to write a poem,
Especially a rhyming one -
The steps are so simple,
You'll even have fun.

First: You must choose your topic.
Second: Begin to write.
Watch how the words
Come out, with delight!

Remember your meter and rhyme scheme -
Don't vary too much on your way.
But don't be too strict
Or your meaning will stray.

Consider the sounds of the words -
Your work might be read out loud.
And don't be too simple -
It should astound.

Avoid the pitfalls of patterns:
Constraining your content to fit;
A sing-song-y feel;
A predictable bit.

Whatever you do, be profound -
Deep as inscrutable night,
And please, please be subtle;
Say little outright.

And make sure you say something new,
Expressing the mood of the age -
You are a prophet,
A rebel, a sage.

So really, there isn't much to it;
Just simple math married to words,
And together they make
Ideas sharp as swords.
