Faithfulness

Well, Saturday was The Gray Havens concert. It was wonderful. Dave and Licia are really lovely, and of course the music was phenomenal. We got to chat a little here and there, and they wanted to know about my own writing. This, naturally, resulted in further thoughts about how I really don't know what I'm doing or where I'm going as a writer. So when I was trying to decide what to post today, I started looking through the poetry folders on my computer. This one caught my eye.

I wrote this poem to the tune of "Great Is Thy Faithfulness" (the final stanza serves as the chorus). I posted it before, just after writing it. This is one of those poems that pretty much wrote itself - an unmistakable gift from God. As such, it hasn't needed much work, but there were still things to be tweaked; a word here, a phrase there, so that it not only says what it's suppose to say, but says it well and sounds right. I think I've finally got there. Maybe. :)

At any rate, the ideas still resonate, albeit in a slightly different way than when I wrote it; I still don't know what I'm doing, or where I'm going, but God does.

Faithfulness

Why am I walking alone in this cavern?
Even your presence seems so far away.
I see the signs that you’ve carved to direct me,
But my faith’s flickering, as I delay.

I am not troubled, for I know you’re here.
You have ordained it, and it will be so.
I can’t help wondering where we are going,
But all you tell me is, “Step out and go.”

I have been learning to trust through surrender,
Leaving contingency planning to you.
All I can do is press on and be faithful;
You’ll lead and guide me as I wait for you.

So I will praise you, Lord, out of this chaos;
Your Spirit’s moving in ways I can’t see.
I will surrender my need to be sovereign
In the assurance that you’ll care for me.

  1. This seems familiar. Is it in your book? (If I was at home, I would have just looked, but I'm still at work and then off to BSF.)

    Glad the concert was great. OCW One-day wasn't the same without you. :)

    1. It's not in the book, but I posted it a little over a year ago here on the blog. It's been edited since then, but it's very close to what it was.
